Writing a smarter travel rule is easy. Acting on one is not.

Take Edinburgh to London. ‘Prefer rail’ sounds sensible - and first-class rail does beat a full-service flight on cost and carbon, but not a £40 easyJet fare from Luton. The rules that hold up are more specific: take the lowest-emission flight of the day; take first-class rail where it comes in under a set premium on flying. Those are easy enough to write down and impossible to follow, because the booking screen doesn’t show which flight that is, or what the route normally costs. It sits alongside them, and nothing about your booking setup changes. Travellers check the trip on a RouteZero site as they book, or, where a plugin can be installed, see the same guidance inline in the booking tool's own results.

Where the plugin can be installed, nothing at all: it reads the trip they are already looking at and shows the better option inline. On the standalone site they enter the trip again, a route and a date, which is the trade-off for it working alongside any booking tool without anything installed. Either way there is no login, no calculator to run, and no spreadsheet after the trip - anything that asks busy people to stop and engage tends to get left to the end or skipped.

Nothing negative. They can dismiss it and continue booking as normal. If they choose to share why, that feedback is used to improve future recommendations, but it's entirely optional.

You set the share when you configure the change in Foresight, and it's calculated from the company's actual saving on that trip. The intent is to fairly compensate the traveller for any additional inconvenience - not as a reward, but as recognition that the company is asking more of them.
